Johnny Cash Brings Troupe To Gate City Benefit Show GATE CITY - Johnny Cash will bring his entire cast of regulars with him for his one-day benefit appearance at the Gate City Legion Field at 4 p.m. Sunday Aug. 15. The performance will raise money for the proposed Carter Family Memorial Park to be built in Scott County, according to the Scott County Expositions, Inc. and will climax Scott County Tobacco Festival Week. Tickets for the show are on sale at the Musicenter at Gate City, AG Electric at Weber City; Skellon's Musicland at Kingsport; Bristol Chamber of Commerce; or by writing "Johnny Cash Show," Box 875, Gate City. In addition to his wife, June Carter, Cash will have Carl Perkins, the Statler Brothers, the Carter Family and the Tennessee Three on the program. Carl Perkins, whose music has been recorded by the Beatles, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, plus many others In the pop music field, is a Gold Record winner in his own right, with his recording of "Blue Suede Shoes," which sold over 2 million records. "Matchbox," another of Carl's hits, was one of the Beatles best sellers, as well as the smash, "Daddy Sang Bass," recorded by Johnny Cash. He recently wrote four of the songs, including the title song, for the current movie "Little Fauss and Big Halscy." Mother Mayuell Carter, one of the three members of the original Carter Family, which began recording back in 1927, and the newest member of the Country Music Association Hall of Fame, is the leader of the current Carter Family group. Helen and Anita Carter, plus Robbie Hardin, formerly of the Hardin Trio, comprise the current group. Mother Maybell,lhc world's leading exponent of the autoharp', is also the originator of the "Carter Scratch," a two-finger style of guitar picking which gained her fame many years ago with her rendition of "The Wildwood Flower." The Statler Brothers, best known for their award-winning hit "Flowers On the Wall," are considered one of the best Gospel groups in the music business today.
