    Description

    Grass stems (Tomlinsonia sp.)
    Barstow Beds Formation, Miocene
    Lenwood Road, near Barstow, California
** The Mojave Desert during Miocene time had scattered oases with grasses, palms, and marsh vegetation.  Two different grasses from the Mojave Desert have been described in the professional literature (Tomlinsonia stichkania and Tomlinsonia tomassonii) but this appears to be a different but undescribed species of the genus Tomlinsonia.  These grass stems far exceed in size those from other Mojave Desert localities that are described in the professional literature.  These are at least three to four times the diameter.  All of the Mojave Desert Tomlinsonia grass species described in the literature are from the Miocene and so is this specimen.  Our photomicrographs show some of the interesting levels of preservation throughout this slab for both the grass culms and leaves.  If you seek the unusual and superb contrast and definition, you just found it!  This slab measures
8.5” x 5” on polished face and is 3/8” thick.  Individual stems measure between 1/2" and 3/4" in diameter.
We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don’t guess and when we don’t know, we say so! Your specimen will come with a label identifying the specimen, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
