    Description

Up for your consideration is a single individual colony specimen of digitate Stromatolitic algae from the Eocene Green River Formation in Sand Wash, near Maybell, Moffet County, Colorado.
This algal colony formed around an ancient twig which eventually rotted away but by that time the algae colony was firmly established and standing upright in the water.
Individual layers of algae were periodically covered by a thin coating of precipitated sediment and the algae would then manage to start a new layer of living colonial algae, usually because there was a bit of a hole in the thin layer of sediment where the algae could penetrate through and begin anew.
This periodicity is now reflected in the differential weathering of the algae in its polished cross-cut (transverse) section.
Our photos show both sides of the length of the colony and the polished bottom showing how the colony grew.
This specimen measures 3/4" x 5/8" inches in cross section.
The entire structure is 2" tall.
We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don’t guess and when we don’t know, we say so! Your specimen will come with a label identifying the specimen, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
