    Description

    Tree Fern (Palaeosmunda williamsii)
    Upper Permian
    Blackwater, Queensland, Australia
Fossil wood sites out of the Permian, whether fern or conifer, are fairly scarce, worldwide. This material is from the Upper Permian Coal Measures of Australia.  This is a transverse section of a palaeosmunda, an ancient ancestor of the today's family of Osmundaceae plants. The vascular supply to the main axis is seen as a semi-hollow ring of xylem in the center.  The spirally-arranged leaf traces (somewhat "eye" shaped), get larger toward the outside of the trunk.  This specimen has colorful pale blue agate filling in the cavities in fronds and main axis.  This specimen measures
4" x 2" on the polished face; it is an end cut varying from 1/16" to 1.5" thick.
We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don't guess and when we don't know, we say so!  Your specimen will come with a label identifying the specimen, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
