Description
Fern fronds (Pecopteris sp
.)
Llewellyn Formation; Pennsylvanian
St. Claire, Pennsylvania
** Up for your consideration is a nice plate with two Pecopteris fern compressions. The St Claire locality is famous for the great preservation and white pyrophyllite coating of the fossil itself that makes the fern stand out against a black shale background. What the locality is also famous for is shale that does not often split evenly along a flat plane making it difficult to find fronds with the tip intact. Often the frond shows up in just small bits and pieces. Here we offer a lucky find - two frond tips on a single smaller plate. A nice display plate that measures 5" x 3.75" on the face and up to .5" thick. The ferns themselves measure just over 2 inches in length.
We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don’t guess and when we don’t know, we say so! Your specimen will come with a label identifying the common name of the plant, the Latin name of the genus or species, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
