** Up for your consideration is a very nice impression and compression Pecopteris fern split pair from the classic Mazon Creek locality near Braidwood, Illinois.  This locality is famous for the great preservation along with extensive flora and fauna species.  The westernmost outcrops of the Carbondale Formation produced the terrestrial plant and animal fossils while the easternmost outcrops produced mainly marine species.  Actually, "outcrop" may be an overgenerous use of the word; the cobbles were unearthed in large open pit coal mines, now long since depleted.  Many of the favorite collecting localities in the spoils piles of the now inactive pits are being reclaimed and cobbles which were once available on the surface are now buried up to hundreds of feet under the re-contoured landscape.  Here we offer a nice display pair from a cobble that measured 3" x 2 1/4" and 3/8" thick.  The fern fossil itself measures 2 1/4" long x 3/8" wide and includes the growing tip of the foliage.
