    Description

Root fossil from an ancient extinct Lycopod tree.
This is a fossilized Lycopod tree root section (Stigmaria ficoides) from the Middle Pennsylvanian (approximately 310 million years old) with nice preservation.
    Solid and heavy for size.
Stigmaria ficoides was an early root in the forests around (325 MYA) during the Carboniferous times.  The vascular tube, which can be seen on some fossils, carried the nutrients to the 100-foot Lycopod tree. This one came out of a mountain. These are found in all kinds of shapes. This one is larger around at one end and tapers down to a smaller size. See ruler for size. They can be round, flattened, bent, etc. The rounder ones were closer to the tree trunk while flattened ones were closer to the flat terminal ends of the roots.
Fossils are pieces of history, a one of a kind item.
