    Description

    This algae specimen comes from the Barstow Formation at Daggett Ridge, near the city of Barstow, San Bernardino County, California.  The strata has been radiometrically dated at 18.7 million years.  We had our lapidary cut through the center of the original block of rock and then polish the end cut face to highlight the oncoid morphology of the algae.  Oncoliths are produced by cyanobacteria which builds a calcium carbonate structure around a bit of inorganic matter (sand, small piece of shell, etc.) as the center nucleus.  We were quite pleased with the resulting specimen and think you will agree that it is a unique specimen.  This algae colony grew around the trunk of a small tree or bush(approximately 1" diameter) and the wood eventually rotted away and was replaced by a filling of mudstone and silica.  This would have been a freshwater algae - all of the non-volcanic sedimentary strata of the Barstow Formation are either fluvial or lacustrine in origin - not ocean based.  This specimen measures 3.5" x 2.25" on the polished face and it varies up to .75" thick.
