Miocene Oncolite algae from Daggett Ridge near Barstow CA large specimen

Description

This algae specimen comes from the Barstow Formation at Daggett Ridge, near the city of Barstow, San Bernardino County, California.  The strata has been radiometrically dated at 18.7 million years.  This would have been a freshwater algae - all of the non-volcanic sedimentary strata of the Barstow Formation are either fluvial or lacustrine in origin - not ocean based.  Oncolites generally form around a nucleus - a bit of sand or perhaps a small bit of shell.  The Cyanobacteria then grows in concentric rings as time passes.  Our photos show the brown semi-circular and circular oncolite growths in the white lime matrix. This is a large and heavy specimen.  It measures approximately 8" x 4.5" x 4.5" on the longest chords.
