    Description

    This is a small ironstone nodule that was collected at the site of the old Peabody Strip Mining Co near Coal City, Illinois.
    It is located in the Mazon Creek Basin which is known as one of the 10 best soft body
    fossil sites in the world.
    It looks like this one was picked up on the surface years after it was exposed, split open by alternate freezing and thawing and slightly weathered.

    search for ironstone nodules - Mazon Creek for information about these fossils.
