GIRVANELLA Oncolite - Lower Cambrian blue-green algae from California

Description

These interesting, very early algal fossils are "Oncolites" which are algae colonies that form spheres or oval shapes as differentiated from "Stromatolites" which are algal colonies forming cylindrical or tube shapes.  The oncolites in this specimen are the dark black round and oval  features which measure in the range up to 1/2 inch  on the longest axis of the oval.  They are taxonomically identified as
Girvanella sp.
The material comes from the Lower Cambrian Chambliss Limestone Formation in San Bernardino County, California.  The specimen measures a
pproximately 3.5" x 3" and 1.25" thick.
