Fossil Positive-Negative of Sphenopteris Branch & Leaves Lehi Utah UT COA 0490

Description

A small, but very nice and rare positive-negative of a small branch of a Sphenopteris from clay beds near Lehi, Utah.  From the Carboniferous, Mississippian about 340 million years ago.  Both halves carry excellent detail, especially for a fossil so small. Both pieces also have a small piece of another branch, which the original owner lightly circled with pencil.
This was found, according to the information at the "M.E. Clay Pits" outside of Lehi, Utah, in 1979. There is a tag further describing it as Scholz Larensis, though I am not personally familiar with that.
The area near Lehi, Utah, has yielded many rich examples of plant life from this period of Earth's history.
The two halves together weigh a combined 557 grams (1 lb. 3.65 oz.). One piece is about 4.2" inches in length; the other is about 8.2" in length.  See photo 2 to compare the actual fossil impressions in size with a quarter.
