Here is a very nice fossil plant from Missouri. This is an Annularia and bark fossil from the Coal Age. Annularia represent the leaf whorls of the Calamites plant. This unusual fossil is wonderfully preserved in a siderite concretion. Both halves of the concretion are present, so both part and counterpart of the fossil are intact. The plants exhibit very fine detail - the Annularia displays two whorls of long, linear leaves. The dark brown fossils contrast well with the light brown matrix. This is a very nice, detailed pair specimen of Annularia and fossil bark from this classic Mazon Creek-like locality.
