    Description

Just outside of Delta, Colorado is 25 Mesa, so called because it is 25 miles from the Colorado-Utah border. Atop this mesa I found a large group of fossilized plant stems. These appear to be a form of Calamite, a Carboniferous (the era that brought us coal) plant. These were swamp plants that could reach up to 180 ft. high.
These three pieces are intended to show the typical way these pieces are found, either discs, the plant was segmented and often the fossil will break at the joints, or stumps. I'm not sure if the "stumps" are at the top of the plant or the beginnings of a branch. I don't think these are from the same plant. The two discs are 2.5 and 1.5 inches in diameter and both about 1 inch tall. The stump is 0.75 inches in diameter and 1.75 inches tall. The combined weight is 3.75 ounces.
