    Description

Just outside of Delta, Colorado is 25 Mesa, so called because it is 25 miles from the Colorado-Utah border. Atop this mesa I found a large group of fossilized plant stems. These appear to be a form of Calamite, a Carboniferous (the era that brought us coal) plant. These were swamp plants that could reach up to 180 ft. high.
These two pieces are not from the same plant. I have included what I believe is a piece near the root, and a a central ring from the stalk. The ring is 2 inches in diameter and 3/4 inches tall, the other piece is about 1 1/2 inches in diameter and in height. Their combined weight is 4.3 ounces.
