Romanus III Argyrus came to the Imperial Throne late in life, being 60 years old when he began his reign. He was a well-meaning if somewhat inept ruler, personally leading a Byzantine Army against the Muslims at Aleppo, where he was suprised and defeated in battle. Although his generals managed to compensate for this defeat with a series of victories against the Saracens, Romanus personally was never forgiven for his military incompetance, and he was subjected to many plots against him for the remainder of his reign.
