Large numbers of petrified tree trunks of A. mirabilis were found still standing in the Cerro Cuadrado Petrified Forest. Preserved in volcanic ash, some of the specimens measure 11 feet in diameter and 330 high. The trees were preserved just as the cones had finished maturing. This is one of those cones.
Many of the cones are highly silicified making them very beautiful specimens when cut and polished. These polished sections reveal much about the internal structure of the cone. The last photo shows a similar cone that has been cut and polished.
