Description
Fern petiole(Acrostichum sp.)
Bridger Formation; Eocene
Oregon Buttes, near Farson, Wyoming
This very beautiful specimen is an agate cast of a short segment of fern stem
(Acrostichum sp.)
that is polished on both ends. There are still a few vascular bundles ;reserved on the periphery of the specimen but for the most part it is an agate cast - including some fortification agate in the center of the piece!
These ferns are still alive in the modern world in tropical habitats and are called by the common name of "Leather Ferns." They are distinctive for the adaxial groove that runs the entire length of the petiole. We have seen a lot of these fossil fern petioles from the Green River Formation at the "cane beds" near Big Sandy Reservoir but we were happy to obtain this specimen from the Bridger Formation at Oregon Buttes. We obtained the specimen from the digger/polisher/dealer so we are assured of the provenance. Please use the eBay photo enlarger for a closer view of the polished face. Our photos show the front polished face,
the second polished face and
the exterior surface. This section measures 1/2
" x 1/2" on each polished face and the section is 2" long.
We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don't guess and when we don't know, we say so! Your specimen will come with a label identifying the specimen, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
