This is a well-traveled
"500 Lire"
note from the Government of, rather than the
"Bank of"
Italy. The first of four dates these were printed under between 1966 and 1975, this one is dated June 20, 1966.
The note pictures
"Arethusa"
a mythological nymph. The image, hair, earring, dolphins and all is a rather old one however. It is taken directly from one of the most beautiful coins ever struck, I repeat, ever and anywhere. Produced 400 years before Christ was born by the superb artists of Syracuse on Sicily.

O11 • 160439 • Dark gray on blue and multicolor underprint. Eagle and snake at left, Arethusa at right. The dolphins, four in number and originally swimming all the way around her on the coin, signified that Sicily was an Island.
Back:
Dates at bottom. Law March 31, 1966 Issued June 20, 1966.
The Note:
A veteran, it passed through many hands. It has some small edge tears and pinholes. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
