1939 KINGDOM of ITALY War Veteran "VNA" or 1 LIRE NOTE Just BEFORE WORLD WAR II
    Description
    This is a veteran,
    "Vna"
or One Lire note from the
    "Regno D'Italia Biglietto di Stato"
or Kingdom of Italy State Note from just before World War II. It was authorized November 14, 1939.
In 1939 Italy was still supporting Franco at the end of the Spanish Civil War. On April 7 Italy invaded Albania and on May 22 signed the
    "Pact of Steel"
with Germany. It did not formally enter World War II until after Germany had invaded France in 1940.

    Face:
Dark brown on light brown underprint. • Grain and Fasces with axe blade.
The symbol of sovereignty, a Fasces was a bundle of rods tied with cords, it dates back to ancient Rome. Roman Magistrates would be escorted through the crowds by a group of Lictors carrying Fasces. In the city itself the Fasces had no axe blade. It was only inserted outside the city when the Magistrate was endowed with
    “Imperium”
. This was the official power of the Senate and People of Rome and not all Magistrates had it. It meant that the Magistrate had the power of life and death in his hands. Members of the College of Lictors were almost the only civil servants of Rome. The Magistrate could instruct a Lictor to unbundle his Rods and whip an unruly citizen.
    Back:
    328 • 375845 • 14 NOVEMBRE 1939 • Brown. • The famous statue of Augustus Caesar.
    The Note:
A well circulated note. It has some small edge splits but no sizeable tears and some microscopic pinholes. It will be sent in a new currency holder that protects it. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
