THIS CALAMITY OF THIS PERIOD WAS ENHANCED BY A PERIOD OF HYPER-INFLATION AND THE ASSEGNATI (WHICH MEANS "ISSUED") PRINTED BY THE ROMAN BANKS WERE PRACTICALLY WORTHLESS

AFTER AN INVASION BY THE KING OF NAPLES WITH SUPPORT BY ADMIRAL LORD NELSON AND HIS FLEET, THE PAPAL STATES WERE RESTORED IN 1799, ONLY TO BE INVADED AGAIN BY THE FRENCH IN 1808 WHEN THEY BECAME PART OF THE NAPOLEONIC EMPIRE UNTIL ITS COLLAPSE IN 1814
